The ‘Do Not Track Law’, officially called the Do Not Track Me Online Act of 2011 is part of a package of Bills released in February of 2011 by Congresswoman Rep. Jackie Speier. The Act would give the Federal Trade Comission (FTC) 18 months to outline a set of standards for corporations to adhere to when tracking online customers. “Consumers have a right to determine what, if any, of their information is shared with big corporations and the federal government must have the authority and tools to enforce reasonable protections,” Speier said in a statement.

Possible Obstacles for the ‘Do Not Track Law’:

Violation of the proposed law could result in fines of up to $11,000 times the number of days a given company is in violation; with the maximum penalty being $5 million.
